Course Review: LaTour Golf Club

Date Played: 5/13/2021

On the way to play LaTour Golf Club, I was fully expecting it to be cart path only. I was pleasantly surprised it was the normal 90° rule. After all the rain we had early in the week the course obviously drains very well.

To start off, LaTour Golf Club will be added to our course directory soon. It had been nearly 5 years since I had played here as I knew they went fully private. It was nice to learn they are accepting public tee-times again at that is what prompted me to go check it out. The clubhouse is still a "temporary" facility but has a full pro shop and full bar and grill overlooking the 9th and 18th greens. The driving range was fully open except for the putting and chipping greens. They were closed due to, what looked like recent aerification. Just a minor issue in being able to roll a few putts before the round but it is understandable to maintain conditions. With that said it could mean the golf course itself may begin aerification soon.

The day was overcast and windy which can make LaTour play difficult but as long as you play the correct tees you can score well. The tee boxes and fairways were in great shape but the grass was a bit long and I am assuming that is due to all the rain days before. The tee-boxes are still very level and the fairways still were rolling out. The only areas on the entire golf course you can tell the amount of rain they had gotten were the bunkers. Some bunkers had water in them and almost all had washed out ruts along the edges. If you were in a bunker it was either playable like normal or you followed the casual water rules.

The greens were in great shape and even though they were a little on the slow slide they were rolling great. If I had to put a number on it I would say they were rolling about an 8. Again this is most likely a maintenance decision from the rain earlier in the week but even with that the greens still had a good firmness to them. Ball marks made on the green were small and barely made an indentation.

All in all LaTour Golf Club exceeded my expectations for the day. The staff was exceptional. Although there was no one there to use the bag drop when I arrived every staff member I encountered greeted me with a smile and treated me as if I was a member of the club. The beverage cart service was around often which is something else I was not expecting for a Thursday. I was paired up with a twosome from out of town and we had a great time playing together. As a single, the staff paired me up with a twosome from out of town. The couple and I had a great time playing together and the pace of play was really good as well.
