This was the first time I got a chance to play at Tamahka Trails Golf Course. I have heard great things about this property for a long time and I was super excited for a chance to visit. Tamahka Trails is a Paragon Casino Resort Golf Course. The property is located in Marksville, LA, and is one of the 17 golf courses on the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail.
The excitement continued upon entering the clubhouse. The clubhouse features a well a stocked pro shop and bar and grill area with views overlooking the putting green and golf course. The clubhouse also has men's and women's locker rooms for guests to shower and get cleaned up before leaving. The entire staff we encountered was very welcoming and friendly.
If you look at the scorecard the golf course does not seem that long, only playing just over 7,000 yards. However, they are adding tee-boxes to some holes and lengthening the golf course. The golf course is a par 71 with 3 par-3 holes on the front 9. Even with 5 par-3 holes on the golf course, they all play differently. Some play as short as 140 yards but can play over 200 yards. Do not let the length or the course par fool you, it is a good challenge but fair if you play the correct tee for your game. Short holes play uphill while some of the longer hills play downhill. There are creeks that weave throughout the golf course and on some holes, those creeks run directly in front of the green.
The design is wonderful and it makes you think your way around the golf course. You can not just grab the driver on every hole and bomb it down there. The greens are small and very undulating and very quick. If you watch the video below you will see a downhill putt barely tapped on and it had so much speed down the hill it hit the edge and spun out. Uphill putts you can give it a good hit but you have to make sure you are uphill. Some of the greens may look uphill but are actually playing more level or even downhill.
All in all, I have to say I highly recommend a trip to play Tamahka Trails Golf Course. I put the golf course in my top 20 I have ever played and over some professional tour golf courses. You get a great feeling of being in Central Louisiana. I look forward to going back as the golf course becomes green and the trees are in full bloom.
