Edit - This review was originally written on the date of play- August 20th, 2025. We spent some time with support and finally got our blog post issue resolved.
It had been a while since I last played at English Turn Golf and Country Club. After hearing so many good things about the course and things happening at the club, it was past due for a review.
I probably say this every time I do a review at English Turn, but it is my favorite overall golf property in the greater New Orleans area. They have everything you need/want in a golf course. From a great clubhouse, which includes full locker rooms and a grill, to a great championship layout with awesome practice facilities, with a full short game green, with bunker, and a large practice putting green. The strange part is, I am not a fan of many Jack Nicklaus golf courses that I have played, but I do love the golf course at English Turn.
I tried to do this review sooner, but I got rained out the day I tried. I was glad I decided to come back right away and not delay this review any longer. It turned out ot be a nice partly cloudy day, although it was still hot. I also didn't want to wait too long after hearing all the positives.
The staff is always great, and the outside service staff I met was doing amazing for his first day. There was no beverage cart service, but the halfway house was open, and I had a pleasant, nearly embarrassing experience there. I overpaid by $10 and didn't realize it until I returned to my golf cart. I was slightly embarrassed to ask for money back, but the girl there was great about correcting my mistake.
As far as the golf course, I did not realize English Turn had recently hosted a competition that required some changes to the golf course. There is a part in the review video where I mention some browning around the edges of a fairway. To me, this was a result of the fairways growing in, making the fairway more narrow and the maintenance staff re-widening the fairways. When grass gets to a certain length, it is nearly impossible to cut it down short again without it looking burnt this time of year. Although I had the reasoning right, I did not know the staff had narrowed the fairways on purpose. Knowing that after the fact impressed me even more that the golf course was not only able to narrow and widen the fairways on purpose, but they did so while keeping the golf course very playable and without killing the grass, but cutting it so short so fast that the heat would damage it. I say good job to the maintenance staff.
Overall Conditions: 4 out of 5
Tee Boxes: 4 out of 5
The tee boxes are all level, and the grass was cut the same as the fairways. They were cut to a height that was just long enough to protect the grass from the heat but still tight enough that even teeing up an iron would be at ground level.
Fariways: 4 out of 5
The fairways were really good. They were not as firm and fast as they would normally be but the entire golf course, just as much of the city, has gotten a good amount of rain recently. Not enough for any cart rules, but it makes things softer and slower. It just meant that my drives didn't roll out that far. The ball would still bounce and roll, but probably only 5 to 10 yards. It just made for some longer 2nd shots.
Greens: 4.5 out of 5
The greens were the best I have seen them in a while. They had a good speed to them, slightly on the quick side, and rolled very pure. The color looked healthy, and the fringe cut outlining them was not only consistent but made them look spectacular. They were very receptive to shots due to the ground being softer than normal, but that did not affect anything except how far you would fly a ball and how fast you wanted it to stop. After the pitch shot on the second hole, I learned the ball would stop faster, but it really depended on the shot you played.
In total, I thought the conditions were near perfect. The rough was up as well, which gave good definition to the fairways and also created enough of a challenge while also being able to find your golf ball. The bunkers were consistent with the sand and the depth, eliminating the need to guess how the ball would react.
I would be a member of English Turn in a heartbeat if I were looking for one course to play every day instead of jumping around like I do. I was somewhat critical during my last review, and all those things are not only fixed but improved upon. The price is decent too, especially for a golf course that has hosted the PGA Tour.
