Golf Course Review: TPC Louisiana, May 2025.

I wanted to do this golf course review of TPC Louisiana before the grandstands came down, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to until this week. However, I still expected the golf course to be in quality condition after the Zurich Classic last month. You can see it in the review video (at bottom)

When I checked in for my tee time, I was told the greens were just lightly top-dressed. This is information usually sent in the tee time confirmation email, and honestly, it may be something I missed. It's still good information to know before teeing off. Walking out to the practice areas, the topdressing was barely noticeable until you walked directly onto the Putting surface of the practice green. Had I teed off at 9 am, I may have gotten to play the course before the top dressing, but it wasn't an issue at all.

I always enjoy TPC Louisiana, and I believe they are priced well for hosting a PGA Tour event. I know many golfers disagree with me and think they overcharge, but I've played other golf courses that practically rob you with their rates after hosting a PGA Tour event. For example, two golf courses that host a PGA Tour event in Florida will up their rate from $125 to $300, or $250 to $700, just to play within the first month after the event. TPC Louisiana keeps the price reasonable in this regard.

When a golf course hosts a PGA Tour event or has the PGA Tour name attached to it like TPC Louisiana does, you come to expect a certain standard. They meet that standard in every aspect, from the outside staff, the golf shop and the grill. They even have a beverage cart on the course daily, regardless of the number of golfers. The only thing TPC falls short on is their tee markers. You get this high-end experience checking in, high-end practice facilities, only to be met with small plastic tee markers that you can mind at a $30 Muni. To me it really cheapens the experience. They used to have nice metal markers with the TPC Louisiana logo in the different tee colors. Not sure why they stopped using them, except that maybe golfers were stealing them.

As for the course conditions everything is what I would have expected. You can see in the video below the course is really in great condition. However, I must say, I think it's time for a new GoPro or new batteries as most of the video I took for the greens did not record. I had to change batteries 3 times and each time it happened was on our near the green. I was still able to get enough for you to be able to see the conditions.

Overall: 4.5 out of 5

Tee Boxes: 5 out of 5

The tee boxes are the best of any public course within 3 hours of New Orleans. They are level, cut the same height as the fairways, and show less wear than other courses. That alone would be good enough for most golfers, but for me, it's how they utilize those tee markers during course setup. They not only get the markers pointed in the right direction, but they also keep the teeing areas within the recommended 6-yard width. This allows the maintenance staff to move the markers around more, allowing for use with less wear. Where the markers are placed on a given day can always be placed in a new spot, allowing the previous day's location time to heal. This is a practice that many golf courses in our area lac,k and why their tee boxes always look chewed up.

Fairways: 5 out of 5

The fairways, for lack of a better word, were perfect. They were cut tight and consistent everywhere, including the approach areas. They were firm, but not so firm that balls would take big bounces and roll too much. Even though the rough wasn't long, the fairway cut left good definition between the fairways and the rough. This may not seem like a big deal to many golfers, but it really gives you a good focus on your target off the tee. Also, even though they were watering holes ahead of me, none of the fairways were wet.

Greens: 4 out of 5

The only reason I don't give the greens a 4.5 or 5 is due to the top dressing and watering. They still rolled great, and the light top dressing had little to no effect. I didn't have any balls bounce while putting, and the speed was pretty quick. Maybe even a bit quicker than they would have been without the top dressing. The only thing was how soft the greens were when hitting a wedge into them. I do not put a great amount of spin on the ball, but the softness from the watering combined with the fast speed, I spun a few balls back a good 10ft or off the green a few times. This was only a handful of shots as I played from 6,900 yards, so hitting a 7 iron to a 3 iron, the ball would not stop as fast, and you would almost have to play short of the green, expecting the ball to bounce and roll out a good bit.

I have come to love TPC Louisiana over the years. There was a time I didn't feel welcome at the golf course. A few years ago, it felt like no employee was happy and almost robotic about the check-in process. That has since changed, and you get an energized welcome like it is a privilege for the staff to have you there. I've also come to appreciate the layout and the challenge of the golf course, even if I still do not like many Pete Dye designs and the many extremely small pot bunkers. You know the course will be in top condition 95% of the time you play, and things will be consistent. Plus, they have one of the best practice facilities in the area. I'd join if I didn't play so many different golf courses, or if they offered me a complimentary membership, just for the practice facilities.
